REGION/LAND DESCRIPTIONCalista Region VillagesThe Calista Region includes the villages of the lower Yukon River, the central and lower Kuskokwim River, Nunivak Island, and the Bering Sea coast from the mouth of the Yukon River south to Cape Newenham. The 56 original Calista villages are organized in 46 for-profit village corporations, each with surface estate ownership.

Located along rivers and the coastline, the villages and their residents share a strong reliance upon a subsistence-based economy. Residents are predominantly of Yup'ik Eskimo, Cup'ik Eskimo and Athabascan cultures and descent.
