Calista Region Villages

Calista region includes the villages of the lower Yukon and the middle and lower Kuskokwim Rivers, Nunivak Island, and the Bering Sea coast from the mouth of the Yukon River south to Cape Newenham. The 56 original Calista villages are organized in 46 for-profit village corporations, each with surface estate ownership.

Located along rivers and coastline, the villages and their residents all have in common a strong reliance upon a subsistance-based economy. Residents are predominantly of Yup'ik Eskimo, Cup'ik Eskimo, and Athabascan descent.
