
Scholarship Information
Purpose according to the Articles of Incorporation:
Provide financial assistance to Alaska Natives to enable recipients to participate in continuing educational activities, formal programs of study and programs to improve the status of Alaska Natives.
Investing in the Calista region and developing the resources of the region includes development of the human resources in order to prepare shareholders and their descendants for independent living and economic self sufficiency. The goal of the Calista Scholarship Fund is to educate the leaders of tomorrow and promote self determination and cultural pride. Scholarship recipients are expected to use their education for the benefit of the region and its people.
The Calista Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 and has 501 (c) (3) recognition under the Internal Revenue Service making donors eligible to receive tax deductible status on donations and gifts made to the Calista Scholarship Fund. Scholarships will not be restricted to a particular field of study, unless a donor restricts their contribution to areas of study in a specific area. For example, a mineral exploration company working on Calista lands may make a donation to scholarship fund with the stipulation that the money be awarded to a student of geology, engineering or natural science.
In order to qualify for scholarship application a student:
- Must be accepted to an accredited school
- Must be an Alaska Native shareholder or a lineal descendant of an Alaska Native shareholder with ties to the Calista region. (lineal descendants must send their birth certificate or other documentation substantiating their relationship to a shareholder)
- Must be a high school graduate or have earned a G.E.D. and be in good academic standing and have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Students must submit transcripts from past academic work to verify grade point average.
The annual deadline for scholarship applications is June 30 of each year.
