RECIPIENT UPDATE


Kirsten Kinegak-Friday

Kirsten Kinegak-Friday is a Yup'ik Eskimo from Bethel, Alaska. Her parents are David Friday and Bertha Kinegak-Friday. She received her Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Stanford University in 2005, where she was president of the Alaska Native Students Association.

Kirsten is now in her second year at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law where she is working on a Juris Doctorate with a specialization in critical race studies. She is currently President of the Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) at UCLA and Secretary of National NALSA.

Kirsten will be graduating May 2009. She interned with Calista last summer in the legal department.


Matthew Tutmaralria Berlin

Matthew Tutmaralria Berlin is originally from Nunapitchuk, Alaska. He is the grandson of the late Nicholai Unguvalria and Olinka Kumlanrilnguq Berlin, the late Kalila Kakgailnguq and Olinka Ugiqaq Slim and Irvin Cagg'aq and Leona Mugul'uq Brink. Matthew graduated from University of Alaska Anchorage, where he double majored in elementary education and Yup'ik Eskimo.


Deanna S. Cagluaq Latham (Strunk)

Deanna S. Cagluaq Latham (Strunk) was raised in Quinhagak, Alaska. She is the oldest daughter of Larry Dee Uqsungiar and Dora Emma Apurin Strunk. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in civil engineering with an emphasis in arctic and environmental engineering in the spring of 2007.

Deanna worked for an engineering firm in Fairbanks last year designing water and wastewater treatment and collection systems for communities in Interior Alaska. This year, she and her husband Brent plan to move back to the Yukon Kuskokwim Region. She hopes to work for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation Facilities and Capital Projects Department on the new health facilities that are being built in the YK Delta.
