Agencies to Consider Effects of Larger Hypothetical Spill
January 26, 2026
(Anchorage, Alaska) – Calista Corporation welcomes today’s Notice of Intent and public comment opportunity issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the Donlin Gold Project’s Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS).
The sole purpose of the SEIS is to review the effects of a larger hypothetical spill than was reviewed in the 2018 Final Environmental Impact Statement for the project’s tailing storage facility. The tailings facility will be built on bedrock and will use a rock-filled, downstream design that is considered the safest design for a tailings dam.
Calista’s top priority for the Donlin Gold Project is protecting fish and our subsistence way of life. Calista owns the subsurface mineral estate and some surface lands at the Donlin Gold Project and supports responsible development as a way to generate socio-economic benefits in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Region, while protecting the land, water and subsistence resources that are central to our way of life in the Region.
Calista encourages its Shareholders and the public to review and submit comments during the draft SEIS process. The USACE is accepting comments on its preparation of the SEIS and the analysis of a larger tailings spill (or range of spill scenarios) until February 24.
