Calista Corporation is a partner in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Coalition, composed of regional and village organizations which advocate for Y-K needs. In February, we traveled with other Y-K Coalition members to Juneau to meet with Alaska legislators and state agency officials. The group discussed regional priorities and coordination related to subsistence, infrastructure, public safety, workforce development, disaster recovery after Typhoon Halong, and energy.
The Y-K Coalition advocates in Juneau and Washington, D.C. for a range of needs that affect the Y-K Region. Members traveling to Juneau in February include Coastal Villages Region Fund, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Regional Tribal Government, The Kuskokwim Corporation, Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Association, and the Native Villages of Kipnuk, Kwigillingok and Chuloonawick.
The Y-K RTG’s involvement in the Y-K Coalition demonstrates the importance of regional Tribal unity, especially in advocacy settings that occur outside the Region, to ensure that our communities present a strong, coordinated voice in state decision-making processes.

On fisheries, the Coalition prioritized discussion on chinook and chum salmon with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G). The department is working with the trawl industry and university partners on bottom trawl bycatch reduction methods. ADF&G is collecting genetic data for Area M chum and chinook salmon.

The Y-K Coalition discussed in breadth with state departments and lawmakers our priorities for the Region. We will continue to work with partners in the Y-K Region and beyond to benefit the people of the Region. Advocating for in-Region priorities and projects is one way we accomplish our mission to improve the economic and social well-being of our Shareholders and communities.
