As we look ahead to the coming winter season, we encourage all Shareholders and communities throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim Region to plan early for their fuel and energy needs. Changes in global energy supply and market conditions are expected to affect both the cost and availability of fuel across our Region. Preparation and collaboration can help our Region navigate the challenges ahead.
For many families in the Y-K Region, fuel is one of the largest household expenses. I encourage residents to consider anticipated price increases as they make summer and fall fuel purchases and develop household budgets for the months ahead.
The Alaska State Legislature has taken several important actions this spring in response to the rise in energy costs. Bulk fuel loan funding has increased with the passage of House Bill 388, which doubles the amount communities can borrow for the state’s Bulk Fuel Revolving Loan Fund. Lawmakers also increased funding for the Alaska Heating Assistance Program and for Power Cost Equalization. Calista advocated in Juneau in support of these measures to help ensure our Shareholders receive the assistance they need during this challenging time.
Shareholders who may qualify for heating assistance are encouraged to apply for the State of Alaska’s Heating Assistance Program. It provides one-time heating cost assistance to low-income households.
Our strength has always come from working together and looking out for one another. By planning ahead and sharing information, we can help protect the wellbeing of our families, Elders and communities.

I am reminded of a lesson from our Elders: Upingarrlainarluta pinarqaakut (UU-BEENG-ah-lai-na-ah-LOO-da Beeng-ach-GAH-gut) which translates to “We must always be prepared.” Just as we work hard to process and dry fish in the summer to consume in the winter months, we must be prepared for higher fuel prices and work with local officials about expected fuel needs.
Supporting the long-term economic and social well-being of our people remains at the heart of our mission. We will continue to work and advocate with other Y-K organizations for solutions that strengthen our communities and promote a sustainable future for the Y-K Region.
