September 1, 2022

(Anchorage, Alaska)Calista Education and Culture, Inc. (CECI) is offering its Take Wing “Tengluni” (TWT)[DUHN-loo-nee] program for high school seniors in the Calista Region. This free post-secondary education program is entering its fourth year and offers both cultural enrichment and academic guidance to inspire youth on a path of personal growth and transition to a post-secondary opportunity of their choice.

The application deadline is fast approaching, Friday, September 9, 2022! To apply, visit www.calistaeducation.org/tengluni.html.

Through Take Wing “Tengluni,” CECI has partnered with the Lower Kuskokwim, Lower Yukon, Kuspuk and Yupiit school districts, to provide high school seniors an opportunity to complete a series of immersion sessions. The immersions assist students with goal setting, additional soft skills training, review of postsecondary opportunities and career planning, healthy choices and Yuuyaraq lessons. Yuuyaraq or “way of being” is the cultural component of the program, and provides well-defined cultural values, roles and rules for living—translated from Yup’ik Elders.

Student immersion participants (high school seniors) will have the opportunity for:

  • Yuuyaraq lessons and post-secondary preparation lessons delivered virtually on Zoom.
  • Individual monthly mentoring sessions with Mentorship Director Annie Pavilla. Assistance via phone or Zoom would include working on and completing the FAFSA, and applying for colleges, trade schools and scholarships.
  • Resources and materials that assist students with preparing for and achieving their goals.
  • Travel opportunities in Fall 2022 (Anchorage) and Spring 2023 (TBD) consist of a week-long, in-person immersion where students learn from CECI staff and visit college/vocational campuses.

Recruitment for the current school year is underway at Lower Kuskokwim, Lower Yukon, Kuspuk and Yupiit school districts, and the deadline to apply is September 9. Students may apply online at www.calistaeducation.org.

CECI looks forward to continuing to help students achieve their educational goals while living the Yuuyaraq values.
