Calista Corporation Highlights Alaska Native Voices with “I Vote Because” Campaign

October 20, 2020

(Anchorage, Alaska) – Calista Corporation has launched an “I Vote Because” campaign to encourage voter turnout by Shareholders and Yukon-Kuskokwim communities. The “I Vote Because” campaign encourages conversation and actions that show the importance of voting to all generations of Calista Shareholders.

“Alaska Native people were not allowed to vote until 1924. We encourage Calista Shareholders to exercise their right to vote and honor the legacy of our ancestors,” said Calista Corp. President/CEO Andrew Guy. “Voting gives us a seat at the table where decisions are made that affect Shareholders and our Region. We are a more powerful voice when voter turnout is high.”

Shareholders can participate in the “I Vote Because” campaign in different ways:

  • Post “I Vote Because” messages including why they vote on social media channels, and share “I Vote Because” posts they see from others.

  • Use a new Facebook Profile Photo Frame created by Calista Corp. (in English and in Yup’ik)

  • Print an “I Vote Because” poster to hang in the workplace or share with friends.

  • Participate in an “I Vote Because” coloring contest to involve children in the voting conversation, teaching them early the importance of using their voice. Shareholders may submit completed coloring sheets before 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 6 to be entered to win a cash prize! Coloring sheets may be submitted at: www.calistacorp.com/I-Vote-Because.

What’s most important is for participating Shareholders to explain why they vote and show others why it’s important to cast a ballot each and every election year.

“Tell others you’re voting and tell them why. Your actions and your reasons could encourage others to make their voice heard as well,” Guy said.

More details about the campaign and how to get involved are available at: www.calistacorp.com/I-Vote-Because.
